Partial Description:

"The Basilica acts as a symbol of the passage from the ethical and poetic unity of the Middle Ages to the new awareness of the active presence of the individual in history and in the world. For artistic culture it represents one of the epicentres of renewal and a crossroads for artists and craftsmen from all over Europe. From the architecture to the painting, here is the workshop and its development, the iconographic epigraph on the tomb, the frescoes, the choir of the upper church, the old lighting of the Basilica, Cimabue's crucifixion in Assisi and a study of the light. There are magisterial portraits, episodes from the Saint's life in innumerable colour depictions, manuscripts photographed from the library, details from tempera on wood from the convent, of an eagle on the façade of the upper church, spectacular stained glass windows photographed against a black background and using black paper from pages 80 through to 96, spectacularly detailed altar-frontal panels and between pages 114 and 115, 12 sheets of the finest handcrafted paper with full page colourful medieval illumination and calligraphic manuscript from the Bible and from musical works. On page 118 there is a spectacular detail of Isaac and Esau and throughout, the expert text shows how these images emerge from the flat surfaces of walls into a spiritually uplifting dimension. From page 190 onwards there are panels and details of the wooden choir with inlays like a bird in a cage and musical instruments and a spectacular double page gatefold spread completes this section. 1991 first edition, 220 spectacular pages measuring 13½" across by 12" and presented in a linen slipcase with tipped in illustrations on front and back"
